Cymbidium parents we use with names from Q to S

This page presents a summary of our cymbidium and other outdoor growing breeding plants which we are currently using in our hybridizing program. These are used for breeding and display only and divisions are generally not for sale. Photographs of many of the plants are included with two image sizes: a thumbnail which is automatically displayed with the plant description, and links to a full sized image. Click on the thumbnail to see the full sized image. If there is no link to a photo at the end of the descriptive text, we do not have a reference photograph of that plant available at this time. Photographs will be added as they become available.

We try to include the important characteristics of each plant and what we expect it to produce as a parent. Plant size is indicated by Lar, Med, or Sm for large, medium or small, type of plant is indicated by Std, Nov or Min for standard, novelty or miniature cymbidium, bloom season is the primary month of bloom in coastal Southern California and ploidy is shown as 2N, 3N, 4N or 6N, or with ? if uncertain. Novelty plants have a miniature parent in the background, and the miniature parent and generation is indicated by P, E, D, C, S, M, O for pumilum (floribundum), ensifolium, devonianum, canaliculatum, sinense (hoosai), madidum or other. The number after the letter indicates first, second, etc. generation for the miniature species in the background.

The list of parents is divided into five separate sections, A - F, G - L, M - P, Q - S and T - Z. Links to each are provided in the sidebar. Again, the plants pictured are generally not for sale. Enjoy!

Quasar 'Passion' is a good round but a little cuppy 4 inch brick red flower, with up to 20 flowers on the spike. This is another of the newer red cultivars we are using for breeding good reds. Std, Med, Feb-Mar, 4N
Cym. Red Beauty 'Carmen' 4N is a bright pinkish red 4 inch flower with heavy substance on medium upright stems, usually with two spikes on the bulb. Like the 2N form, this can breed spots and and is useful for spotted breeding. Std, Med, Feb, 4N
Cym. Red Beauty 'Prinses Frederika' 4N is a brownish red 4 inch well formed heavy flower on medium upright stems, often with two or more spikes on the bulb. We have used this clone for a number of tetraploid red and brown crosses with very good results. Std, Med, Feb, 4N
Regal Ruby 'Garnet' is a good round 4 inch brick red flower, with up to 18 flowers on the spike. This is another of the red cultivars we are using for breeding good reds. Std, Med, Feb-Mar, 4N
Cym. Rincon 'Clarisse' 4N HCC/AOS is an old parent which figures in the background of many modern awarded hybrids. The flower is light pink, 4 inches across, well formed and is very free blooming on medium spikes. It is generally color recessive in breeding and has produced white, yellow, pink, green and red offspring, depending on the other parent, imparting good form and free blooming characteristics. It doesn't make a good cut flower parent, however. Std, Med, Feb, 4N
Cym. Robin 'Freckles' 4N HCC/AOS is an unusual 4.5 inch light green very round flower with heavy substance which is well covered with burgundy spotting. We have used this for several spotted crosses. Std, Med, Mar, 4N
Cym. Rozel Bay 'Mont Millais' FCC/RHS has the best spike I have seen on a yellow standard. The 4.5 inch round butter yellow flowers are well held at the top of a 4.5 foot spike. We are using this to improve the spike habit of several yellow hybrids. Std, Med, Apr, 4N

San Elijo 'Midnight' is another new addition to our red breeding program. It is a 4.5 inch flower with heavy substance and up to 12 flowers on an upright spike. Scarlet Beauty 'After Dark' HCC/AOS B/CSA is the darkest reddish brown standard cymbidium we have flowered, with dark chocolate brown sepals. Std, Sm, Mar, 4N

A first bloom seedling 4 years from flask, it received its awards with 14 flowers larger than 5 inches on a tall upright to arching spike. We are trying it with spots and reds for now. Std, Med, Feb, 4N

Solana Star 'Freckles' is a 5" blush white flower well spotted with fine light burgundy spots in an unusual pattern. It has up to 17 flowers on a long arching spike. We think this could be another good spotted parent, and have a few crosses coming from it. Std, Med-Lar, Mar, 4N

Street Hawk 'Amethyst' is unlike any other flower in the sibling cross of Street Hawk, and is a bright amethyst purple color rather than the normal burgundy red. It has great award quality form, and an upright spike with up to 16 3 inch flowers. We think this should be a good parent for bright purple red novelty flowers. Nov, Sm, Feb, P3
