Cymbidium parents we use with names from G - L

This page presents a summary of our cymbidium and other outdoor growing breeding plants which we are currently using in our hybridizing program. These are used for breeding and display only and divisions are generally not for sale. Photographs of many of the plants are included with two image sizes: a thumbnail which is automatically displayed with the plant description, and links to a full sized image. Click on the thumbnail to see the full sized image. If there is no link to a photo at the end of the descriptive text, we do not have a reference photograph of that plant available at this time. Photographs will be added as they become available.

We try to include the important characteristics of each plant and what we expect it to produce as a parent. Plant size is indicated by Lar, Med, or Sm for large, medium or small, type of plant is indicated by Std, Nov or Min for standard, novelty or miniature cymbidium, bloom season is the primary month of bloom in coastal Southern California and ploidy is shown as 2N, 3N, 4N or 6N, or with ? if uncertain. Novelty plants have a miniature parent in the background, and the miniature parent and generation is indicated by P, E, D, C, S, M, O for pumilum (floribundum), ensifolium, devonianum, canaliculatum, sinense (hoosai), madidum or other. The number after the letter indicates first, second, etc. generation for the miniature species in the background.

The list of parents is divided into five separate sections, A - F, G - L, M - P, Q - S and T - Z. Links to each are provided in the sidebar. Again, the plants pictured are generally not for sale. Enjoy!

Cym. Golden Elf 'Sundust 4N' is a bright clear yellow ensifolium hybrid that usually blooms in August. It is one of the few plants that are used for early (September - October) blooming hybrids. Nov. Med, Aug, 4N
Gold Queen 'Mother Lode' is a bright yellow 4 inch well formed flower with a bold red banded lip. It can have up to 14 flowers on an upright spike. We use it for breeding bright yellow pot plants.
Cym. Greenezelle 'Hot Shot' AM/AOS B/CSA is the best of the cross. This flower opens very flat for a cymbidium with very good form. The flower is 5 inches in span, bright green with a dark red banded lip and no sunstaining under my 55% shade cloth outdoor area. We haven't seen any of the offspring yet, but they should be good greens. Std, Med, Mar, 4N
Green Glass 'Solana Beach' HCC/AOS is a 5.5 inch full green flower with a bold burgundy red banded lip. It can have up to 18 flowers on a tall spike, and has bred a number of fine green crosses. We continue to use it to produce large award quality plants with other good greens. Std, Med, Feb-Mar, 4N
Cym. Happy Hooker 'Ruby' AD/CSA is one of the darkest burgundy red cymbidiums I have seen. The surface of all segments has a velvet texture which gives a wonderful play of color in sunlight. The flower is about 4 inches across, and is not as full as some, but we are using it just for the color we think it may give in its progeny. Std, Med, Mar, 2N
Hazel Fay 'Shocking' AM/AOS B/CSA is a chance tetraploid from the triploid cross. It breeds as both a pollen and pod parent and produces large amounts of viable seed. It is a 4.5 inch flower on an arching spike, and should produce lots of good orange to bright yellow flowers. Std, Med, Feb-Mar, 4N
Hazel Tyers 'Santa Maria' is a widely used large pink flower with up to 16 5 inch flowers on a long arching spike. It has produced many good cut flower crosses, and a number of awarded offspring. We use it for breeding large pinks and whites. Std, Med-Lar, Mar-Apr, 4N
Helen Tangcay 'Charming' S/CSA HCC/AOS is a large 5.5" clear pink flower with up to 16 heavy flowers on a medium to long spike. We are using this for exhibition quality pink breeding. Std, Med-Lar, Mar, 4N Meristems Available!
Helen Tangcay 'Passion' B/CSA was the first plant to bloom out of the cross, and received its award as a first bloom seedling. The flowers are about 5 inches across, and can have 15 flowers on the spike. We are using this for pink breeding, and think it may breed some patterned flowers as well. Std, Med-Lar, Feb-Mar, 4N
Cym. Hot Line 'Solana Beach' is a nice 4 inch brownish red flower which we have used quite a bit. It gives very nice dark red flowers on medium sized plants, and has a number of awarded offspring, including Happy Hooker, Fire Storm and the Ruby Girls. Std, Sm, Mar, 2N
Hot Mouse 'Purple Haze' is an unusual 3.5 inch smokey purple flower with up to 25 flowers on a long upright to arching spike. We use this for its unique color and free blooming characteristics. Std, Med, Apr, 2N
Hot Tamale 'Erika' is one of our more vigorous and reliable blooming spotted cymbidiums, and is both a pod and pollen parent. It is a 3.5 inch flower with up to 12 flowers on a medium length upright to arching spike. We think it will provide some good spotted offspring. Std, Sm, Mar, 2N
Jack Pearlstein 'Geyserland' is an early blooming yellow-orange 3" flower with a red overlay, and a wonderful fragrance. It can have 15 or more flowers on a tall erect spike. The early bloom season and fragrance comes from Peter Pan in the background. We are using this to introduce fragrance into the large flowered cymbidiums. Nov, Med, Dec, 4N
James Toya 'Ohana' is one of the best true red cymbidiums we have seen with up to 13 5" round full flowers on an upright spike. We are using this to try to get better red color and form into the red lines of breeding. Although we haven't bloomed a cross from it yet, I think it has good potential. Std, Med-Lar, Feb-Mar, 4N
Joan's Charisma is one of the best exhibition white flowers we have seen. It is about 4.5" across on an upright spike, and blooms for midseason. It has been used a good deal in Australia for exhibition white breeding with good success. Std, Med, Feb-Mar, 4N
Cym. Jolity 'Golden Heritage' 4N is a 4 inch light yellow open formed flower with a very nice dark lip which usually comes through in its progeny. It has a medium upright spike which also usually comes through. We use this for yellow pot plant breeding. Std, Med, Jan, 4N
Jolly Gold 'Lemon' is a bright yellow 4.5 inch flower with up to 18 flowers on a medium tall upright spike. It normally has two spikes on a bulb, and up to 8 spikes in an 8" pot is common. It isn't as full in form as some, but the floriferousness should make it great for pot plant production. Std, Med-Lar, Dec-Jan, 4N
Joyce Goffin 'Waikanae' HCC/AOS is a 5" round orange yellow flower with up to 14 flowers on a medium length upright stem. We are using this to produce large yellow to orange flowers for midseason. Std, Med, Feb, 4N
Karen 'Maize' is a famous yellow parent that has been used as a parent in many hybrids. It can have up to 15 5" flowers on an upright to arching spike. We are using this with other yellow or orange parents to produce exhibition and award quality crosses in the yellow to orange shades. Std, Med-Lar, Feb-Mar, 4N
Cym. Karen 'Mokoia Sunset' is the largest, best formed yellow orange 5 inch cymbidium flower I have seen. The only disadvantage is it will have only 10 flowers on the spike as I grow them outdoors. We are using it with other high flower count parents to get better yellow and orange flowers. Std, Med, Feb, 4N
Kickapoo 'Burnt Orange' is a golden yellow 4.5" flower with a red overlay giving the illusion of orange, and has a nice fragrance. It can have up to 15 flowers on a medium length stem. We use this for both yellow/orange and for potential fragrant breeding. Std, Med, Mar-Apr, 4N
Knock Out 'Splash' is an interesting patterned flower that typically opens a light yellow with a reddish pattern seemingly brushed on the sepals and petals. We have used this with similar patterned flowers to enhance the characteristic, but it is too early to tell how well it is going to work. It can have 14 4" flowers on a medium arching spike. Std, Med, Mar, 4N
Kusuda Shining `Geyserland' HCC/AOS is a bright orange red very fragrant 3" flower with up to `6 flowers on an upright stem. It has been used as a parent for a number of orange and fragrant early blooming crosses, and we are using it to bring fragrance into larger flowers. Nov, Med, Oct-Nov, 4N
Cym. Lady Spring '#3' is a 4 inch red flower with up to 18 flowers on a 4 foot spike, and is very free flowering. We have had as many as 10 spikes in an 8 inch pot blooming from late January to the end of May. The flower form of this clone is not as good as the other three, but we are using this to produce free blooming red cymbidium hybrids for pot plants. Std, Lar, Mar, 4N
Cym. Lady Spring 'Geyserland' is a 4 inch round dark red flower with 12 flowers on a 3 foot spike. This has very good form and is of potential award quality. We are using this to increase the size and improve the form in the dark red cymbidium hybrids. Std, Med, Mar, 4N
Lady Spring 'Midnight' is a dark purple red 4" standard flower from a sibling cross of Lady Spring. It can have up to 14 flowers on the arching stem. Std, Med, Mar, 4N
Lady Spring 'Ray' AM/AOS is a dark burgundy red 4" flower out of a sibling cross of Lady Spring. It can have up to 12 flowers on an upright to arching stem. We are using this with other dark red parents in hope of getting much darker and more intense reds. Std, Med, Mar, 4N
Cym. Lambert Day 'Burgundy' is a delightful dark brownish red novelty which starts blooming in January and keeps producing spikes through June. We have had 16 spikes in a season on this plant in a 12 inch pot. It will have up to 30 star shaped 3 inch flowers on an arching spike. We hope to see free flowering dark red novelties with this as a parent. Nov, Lar, Mar, 2N, M1
Lee Teakell 'Nancy' AM/AOS S/CSA is the second plant to flower from the cross of (Lambert Day 'Burgundy' x devonianum). It can have up to 20 or more 2" flowers on a cascading spike. It can hold a pod with good germination, but we don't know if the pollen is viable yet. We are using this for breeding very dark cascading novelty hybrids. Nov, Sm, Apr, 2N?
Cym. Lemon Butter 'Solana Gold' is a soft medium yellow 5 inch full flower with a red banded lip on medium length upright spikes with 12 to 14 flowers. We expect this plant to produce medium to large sized yellow to green flowers when hybridized with other yellow or green parents. Std, Med, April, 4N
Cym. Lemon Butter 'Solana Jade' is a soft medium green 4 inch full flower with a red banded lip on medium length upright spikes with 12 to 14 flowers. We expect this plant to produce medium sized yellow to green flowers when hybridized with other yellow or green parents. Std, Med, April, 4N
Cym. Len Southward 'Tranquility' is a deep green 2.5 inch novelty flower with a yellow lip on a 4 foot pendant spike with up to 30 flowers which last 3 months. Judging from the robust size of the plant and the substance, form, keeping quality of the flower and its willingness to breed and produce large quantities of viable seed, I believe it to be a tetraploid. It is not a pure color since it has a tiny amount of red spotting in the throat. We expect this plant to produce yellow to green novelty flowers when hybridized with other yellow or green parents. Nov, Large, April, 4N?
Lotza Spotz 'Miki' is one of the best of the remake of the cross. It can have up to 14 4" flowers on a medium length arching spike. So far, it is the only plant of the cross that we have been able to get to breed, and it works as both a pollen and pod parent. We don't know how dominant the spotting will be yet, but it is a good grower and a reliable bloomer. Std, Med, Mar, 2N
Louise Hay 'Nancy' is the best plant we have bloomed out of the cross. It consistently flowers with two spikes on the bulb and up to 14 5" award quality flowers on the upright inflorescence. We are using this for breeding award quality yellows. Std, Med, Mar, 4N
Lucky Shamrock 'Green Glen' HCC/AOS B/CSA is a bright clear green 5" flower with a bright red banded lip. We are using this in our breeding to improve the size and color of new green hybids. It can have up to 16 flowers on an upright to arching spike. Std, Med, Mar, 4N
