Cymbidium parents we use with names from M to P

This page presents a summary of our cymbidium and other outdoor growing breeding plants which we are currently using in our hybridizing program. These are used for breeding and display only and divisions are generally not for sale. Photographs of many of the plants are included with two image sizes: a thumbnail which is automatically displayed with the plant description, and links to a full sized image. Click on the thumbnail to see the full sized image. If there is no link to a photo at the end of the descriptive text, we do not have a reference photograph of that plant available at this time. Photographs will be added as they become available.

We try to include the important characteristics of each plant and what we expect it to produce as a parent. Plant size is indicated by Lar, Med, or Sm for large, medium or small, type of plant is indicated by Std, Nov or Min for standard, novelty or miniature cymbidium, bloom season is the primary month of bloom in coastal Southern California and ploidy is shown as 2N, 3N, 4N or 6N, or with ? if uncertain. Novelty plants have a miniature parent in the background, and the miniature parent and generation is indicated by P, E, D, C, S, M, O for pumilum (floribundum), ensifolium, devonianum, canaliculatum, sinense (hoosai), madidum or other. The number after the letter indicates first, second, etc. generation for the miniature species in the background.

The list of parents is divided into five separate sections, A - F, G - L, M - P, Q - S and T - Z. Links to each are provided in the sidebar. Again, the plants pictured are generally not for sale. Enjoy!

Cym. madidum is a species which puts out many long pendant spikes with up to 30 clear green 1 inch flowers on a large plant. The hybrids are usually very free blooming with lots of flowers and make specimen plants readily. The color usually follows the other parent. Min, Lar, Apr, 2N
Marie Bashir 'Flash' is a bright golden yellow with a red flare on the sepals and petals coming from the Wallacia parent. It can have up to 16 flowers 4.5 inches across on the medium tall stem and two spikes per bulb if grown well. The flaring characteristic should come through in some of its seedlings, and we use it for this reason. Std, Med, Feb-Mar, 4N
Marie Bashir 'Shocking' is another bright golden yellow with a bright red flare on the sepals and petals coming from the Wallacia parent. It can have up to 16 flowers 4.5 inches across on the medium tall stem and two spikes per bulb if grown well. The flaring characteristic should come through in some of its seedlings, and we use it for this reason. Std, Med, Feb-Mar, 4N
Mas Cerveza 'Miki' is a nice clear pink round 4.25 inch flower with a good amount of burgundy spotting on the sepals and petals. We are using this with other spotted parents to get a few more intensely spotted offspring. Std, Med, Mar, 2N
Cym. Mighty Mouse 'Minnie' is a famous diploid breeder. It is very free flowering with up to 6 spikes in a gallon pot and more than 20 greenish brown flowers with dark lips on the 3.5 foot long spike. The dark lip and free flowering characteristic are dominant in the offspring. Std, Med, Mar, 2N
Cym. Mighty Mouse 'Minnie' 4N is a colchicine converted tetraploid version of the famous diploid breeder. It is free flowering with up to 14 greenish brown flowers with dark lips on the 3 foot long spike. The dark lip and free flowering characteristic are dominant in the offspring. Std, Med, Mar, 4N
Mighty Sensation 'Geyserland' is a deep brick red 4 inch flower with a very dark red band on the lip and up to 15 flowers on an upright spike. This is another good red in our breeding program, and we are using it with other dark reds to increase the flower size and reduce the fading tendency. Std, Med-Lar, Mar, 4N
Cym. Mimi 'Mary Bea' AM/AOS B/CSA is a red miniature breeder which has been used in many hybrids. It often seems to breed as a tetraploid and produces free blooming red novelties with bold dark banded lips. Min, Sm, Mar, 2N?, P1
Mount Vision 'Charm' is a nice clear medium pink round 4" flower with a good amount of burgundy spotting on the sepals and petals. We are using this with other spotted parents to get a few more intensely spotted offspring. Std, Med, Mar, 2N
Cym. Mustang Ridge 'Erika' is a rusty red relatively open formed 4 inch flower on 3 foot long strong upright spikes, often two to a bulb and usually blooming in mid December. We are using this for breeding red Christmas pot plants. Std, Med, Dec, 4N
Cym. Mustang Ridge 'Goldie' is a reddish yellow relatively open formed 4 inch flower on 3 foot long strong upright spikes, often two to a bulb and usually blooming by Christmas. We are using this for breeding red and yellow Christmas pot plants. Std, Med, Dec, 4N
Cym. Mustang Ridge 'Miki' is a rusty red relatively open formed 4 inch flower on 3 foot long strong upright spikes, often two to a bulb and usually blooming in mid December. We are using this for breeding red Christmas pot plants. Std, Med, Dec, 4N
Cym. Peetie 'Golden Harvest' is a bright golden yellow 4 inch fragrant flower. We have used this for yellow breeding, and with a few other fragrant standards to breed fragrance into modern cymbidiums. Std, Med, Feb, 2N
Pepper's Fire 'Fiesta' AD/CSA is a charming little petal peloric red novelty flower. It can have up to 10 2.5 inch flowers on an upright spike. It can hold a pod and be a pollen parent, and produces good seedlings, although it may be difficult to set a pod. We don't know if the peloric charactistic will breed on when used with other petal peloric plants, but we are using it. Nov, med, Jan-Mar, 3N?
Pepperpuss 'Dark Spirit' JC-HCC/AOS is a yellow green flower well marked with burgundy spots on the sepals and petals and a nearly solid dark burgundy velvet lip with up to 17 3.5 inch flowers on a long cascading spike. We are using this to get better spotted cascading spotted flowers. Nov, Std, Mar, 2N
Pepperpuss 'Falling Star' is a yellow green flower well marked with dark red spots on the sepals and petals and a burgundy blotched white lip. It has up to 16 3.5 inch flowers on a long cascading spike. It is reluctant to breed, but we have had some success. We think it will be useful for breeding well spotted pendant flowers. Nov, Med, Mar-Apr, 2N
Pepperpuss 'Freckleface' is a nice clear pink with good burgundy spotting on the sepals and petals and a burgundy blotched white lip. It has up to 16 3.5 inch flowers on a long cascading spike. It is reluctant to breed, but we have had some success. We think it will be useful for breeding well spotted pink pendant flowers. Nov, Med, Mar-Apr, 2N Meristems Available!
Peter Dawson 'Grenadier' G/CSA AM/AOS is a large 5 inch white flower with a greenish background. It can have up to 16 well spaced and presented flowers on the spike. The primary drawback to this plant is a relatively weak spike while it is developing, so that it needs a number of ties. Once set, the spike is self supporting. We use it occasionally but try to improve the spike habit. Std, Med, Jan-Feb, 4N
Cym. Peter Pan 'L5' B/CSA is one of the best of the selfing of Peter Pan 'Greensleeves' 4N. It produces longer spikes with more flowers and a deeper green color and a darker red lip. This is the backbone of our primary early breeding program. Min, Sm, Sept, 4N, E1
Cym. Pfeiffer Falls 'Cascade' (Jean Brummitt x Tethys) is a medium green with 12 to 14 open formed 3 inch flowers on an pendant spike with a dark burgundy lip, and is covered with burgundy spots on the sepals and petals. We are using this plant with other spotted or pendant parents to develop more spotted pendant flowers. Nov, Sm, Mar, 2N, D2
Phar Lap 'Yoshi Kage' AM/AOS S/CSA is one of the best of the cross, and appears to be a chance tetraploid. It can breed as a pod parent, but usually is more successful as a pollen parent producing good amounts of viable seed. It has very heavy waxy dark burgundy red sepals and petals on a medium length arching to pendant spike, and is good for breeding dark red flowers on pendant spikes. Nov, Med, Apr, 4N?
Cym. Phreaque 'Gotcha' is one of the better labelloid sepal peloric flowers from the cross. We are using this to breed more of this type for the amateur market who likes the unusual and exotic. We believe about 50% of the offspring will exhibit this characteristic. Std, Med, Mar, 4N
Cym. Piņata 'Erika' is a very nicely spotted light pink flower with a dark velvet lip on a long spike. This is a part of our spotted cymbidium breeding program. It has produced some very nice spotted offspring. Std, Med, Mar, 2N

It can have up to 18 4" flowers on a long arching spike, and about 50% of the offspring should have the peloric markings as well, based on past experience with this type of flower. Std, Med-Lar, Mar, 4N
Pywacket 'Evergreen' is a delightful spotted orange flower from the cross of (Tethys x tracyanum). It has up to 15 flowers on an arching spike, and the flowers are very botrytis resistant. This should be a good parent for breeding spots. Std, Med, Mar, 2N
