What's New in the world 1999

This is a photographic review of the some of the new and more interesting things that I have seen from come from Ray Dix's hybridizing program in New Zealand for the 1998 season. These plants are seedlings flowering for the first time. We think he has some of the nicest red seedlings in the world. All of these photos were taken by Ray. The cross of Cym. Hot Guru (Hot Prime x Kiwi Guru) has produced a number of dark red flowers. The flowers are typically on the small side and a little cupped as seen in this flower. This flower measured 9.0 cm across with a 4.2 cm dorsal sepal and 12 flowers on its first blooming. 46 kb. Cym. Hot Guru
This Cym. Hot Guru is 8.8 cm across with a 4.3 cm dorsal sepal and 9 flowers on the spike. The flower is a little cupped. 39 kb.Cym. Hot Guru
This Cym. Hot Guru is one of the largest at 10.5 cm across, with a flatter form than most of the cross. It has a 4.5 cm dorsal sepal and 10 flowers on its first blooming. 40 kb. Cym. Hot Guru
This plant of Cym. Hot Guru is 9.0 cm across, and is a little more cupped than the others shown here, but the color is very smooth. It has a 4.5 cm dorsal sepal and 11 flowers on one spike on its first blooming. 40 kb. Cym. Hot Guru
This Cym. Hot Guru is rather cupped, but is 10.0 cm across. I think it is the best of the Hot Gurus shown here. It has a 4.0 cm dorsal sepal and 21 flowers and two spikes on its first blooming. The color in this plant is more even than seen in many reds. 35 kb. Cym. Hot Guru
The cross of Cym. Hot Port (Hot Prime x Yowie Flame) has produced a number of dark wine red flowers. The flowers, like most reds, are typically on the small side and often are slightly cupped as seen in this flower. This flower measured 9.0 cm across with a 3.5 cm dorsal sepal and 30 flowers on two spikes. The even wine red color is enhanced by the clear white margin on the segments. This was the best red cymbidium at a CSA show. 41 kb.Cym. Hot Port
This plant of Cym. Hot Port is one of the smaller ones with 20 flowers on two spikes. The flower is 8.5 cm across with a dorsal width of 3.8 cm. The segments are well proportioned, and it is a very nice red. 44 kb.Cym. Hot Port
This Cym. Hot Port is one of the largest ones, with 10 flowers 10.5 cm across and a dorsal width of 3.8 cm. This flower is a flatter than most and is a little open in form, but it is still a nice red. 47 kb.Cym. Hot Port
Ray has given this Cym. Hot Port the varietal name of 'Boost'. The plant had 14 flowers on two spikes, each 10 cm across with a dorsal width of 4.0 cm. This flower is relatively large and flat and a little on the open side, but has a very nice even deep color. 37 kb.Cym. Hot Port 'Boost'
This Cym. Hot Port 'Charity' shown here is my favorite of the cross. This plant had 9 flowers 9.0 cm across with a dorsal width of 4.2 cm. This has the cleanest color red I have seen in the slides Ray has sent me.. The flower is beautifully proportioned and arranged on the spike. 40 kb.Cym. Hot Port 'Charity'
This is another view of the spike of Cym. Hot Port 'Charity' which was shown in the SAOS Charity show where it was the Grand Champion Cymbidium. 52 kb.Cym. Hot Port 'Charity'
Cym. Hot Port 'Henderson' received a B/CSA and HCC/NZOS and was Grand Champion at the Auckland Orchid Club show in 1998. It had 20 flowers on two spikes, each 9.0 cm across and a dorsal width of 4.5 cm. The flower is well proportioned and has an even clear medium red color. 43 kb.Cym. Hot Port 'Henderson'
Cym. Hot Port 'Promise' is one of the larger flowers from the cross. It had 28 flowers on three spikes, each 10.0 cm across and a dorsal width of 4.3 cm. The flower is a little cupped and has an even dark burgundy red color. 35 kb.Cym. Hot Port 'Promise'
Cym. Hot Port 'Wiki' was the best red cymbidium at the CSA show in 1998. It had 11 flowers on one spike, each 9.5 cm across and a dorsal width of 4.5 cm. The flower is well proportioned and has an even clear dark wine red color. 45 kb.Cym. Hot Port 'Wiki'
Cym. Hot Spring is a hybrid of Cym. (Hot Prime x Lady Spring). Ray has bloomed a number of these out this season and, overall, most are good reds. This plant is 8.5 cm wide with a dorsal sepal width of 4.0 cm and is well formed with a good brick red color. There were 12 flowers on one spike, and it was the best seedling in the Waivaso Show. 42 kb.Cym. Hot Spring
This Cym. Hot Spring is a little larger than the first example, but seems more cupped in form. The flower was 9.0 cm across with a dorsal sepal width of 4.5 cm with 18 flowers on two spikes as a first flowering seedling. The color is a dark brick red. 37kb. Cym. Hot Spring
This Cym. Hot Spring is one of the smaller ones with 9.5 cm overall width and a 4.0 cm wide dorsal, but it had 27 flowers on two spikes. The color is nice and even with little veining. 46 kb. Cym. Hot Spring
This Cym. Hot Spring is larger than many and has a very nice clear dark red color. The flower measured 10.o cm across with the dorsal measuring of 4.7 cm wide and there were 9 flowers on the first blooming spike. This plant was the best seedling and reserve champion cymbidium at the Howick show. 50 kb. Cym. Hot Spring
This is one of the reverse cross of Cym. Hot Spring where Lady Spring held the pod. The flower is 9.7 cm across with a 4.2 cm wide dorsal sepal and 15 flowers on the spike. This plant was the best red and champion cymbidium at the Howick show. 47 kb.Cym. Hot Spring 'Howick'
This plant of Hot Spring 'Mt. Albert' is also on the small side. The flower is 8.5 cm across with a 4.5 cm wide dorsal sepal and 7 flowers on the spikes. This flower is more cupped than most. 42 kb.Cym. Hot Spring 'Mt. Albert'
Ray does have more than red cymbidiums as is shown here with this first flowering seedling of (Hot Prime x Sylvan Globe). This flower is a nice clear pink, 9.5 cm across with a 4.0 cm dorsal width and 8 flowers on the spike. 42 kb. Cym. (Hot Prime x Sylvan Globe)
Another of Ray's pink seedlings is this first flowering seedling of (Maui Safari x Hot Prime). This flower is a clear pink, 10.5 cm across with a 4.0 cm dorsal width and 9 flowers on the spike. 39 kb. Cym. (Maui Safari x Hot Prime)
There can be a good deal of variation in a cross as is shown by this plant of (Maui Safari x Hot Prime) which turned out dark red rather than the pink shown above. The flower is 8.0 cm in width and has a 4.0 cm wide dorsal sepal with 29 flowers on two spikes. 44 kb. Cym. (Maui Safari x Hot Prime)
