The 1998 shows

This is a photographic review of the some of the new and more interesting things that we saw at the East West show at the New Otani in mid-October 1998. Click on the thumbnail to bring up a larger image (size shown in kilobytes).

Dendrobium cuthbersonii is a charming little species which rewards the grower with an abundance of brilliant flowers. This basket with several different varieties was shown by Cal-Orchid. 71 kb.Den. cuthbersonii
Andy Phillips (Andy's Orchids) consistently puts together a fine display of nothing but species. His display at the New Otani garnered the AOS Show Trophy, the AOS Gold Medal certificate and the new Otani Trophy, and was truly spectacular, towering 10 feet in the air next to a staircase so even the plants at the top of the tree were easily visible. 76 kb.Andy's Orchids Display

Cym. erythrostylum makes a great show in the fall as shown here in Andy's Orchids display. This species is in the background of nearly all early flowering standard cymbidiums. 70 kb.Cymbidium erythrostylum
Rodriguezia lanceolota is another charming epiphyte with roots hanging with abandon in the breeze. This specimen was perched at the top of Andy's Orchids display. 91 kb.Rodriguezia lanceolota

The Newport Harbor Orchid Society put in a small display with this stunning unnamed zygopetalum. This is the darkest zygo that I have seen. 53 kb.Unnamed Zygopetalum
I have seen many ways of displaying plants, but this collection of small plants on a stunning piece of coral was a departure from the norm. I'm not sure which I liked better, the orchids or the coral. 87 kb.Orchids on coral
Sunset orchids specializes in the odont alliance, and their display at the New Otani was another striking example of their current work. 91 kb.Sunset Orchids
A number of plants from the Vandaceous alliance were on display throughout the show. This Ascosenda Bonjong Watercolor was a good example of the colors to be seen in the modern hybrids. 76 kb.Ascocenda Bonjong Watercolor
A number of oncidiums were present in the show. Orchid Affair used this well flowered specimen of oncidium Aloha 'Iwanaga' as a cornerstone for their display. 84 kb.Oncidium Aloha 'Iwanaga'

Zygopetalums are an easy to grow fall blooming plant. This Z. Kiwi Geyser 'Cranbury' in the Orchids of Los Osos display is one of the better ones. 45 kb.Z. Kiwi Geyser 'Cranbury'
