What's New at the Casa 1999 Volume 2

This is the second segment of a photographic review of the some of the new and more interesting things that have come out of our hybridizing program in the 1999 season, or things we have finally documented with a photograph. Most of these plants are seedlings flowering for the first time, and we do not have divisions available for sale at this time. We include them to demonstrate the range of color and form available with modern Cymbidium hybridizing, and to show the progress of hybridizing in new directions. Many of these may be available in the next several years as meristem plantlets. Click on the thumbnail to bring up a larger image (size shown in kilobytes).

Cym. Splatters 'Red Velvet', as shown here, is an interesting spotted flower with a blood red velvet lip bred from Cym. Robin 'Freckles' 2N and Cym. Tethys 'Black Magic'. Although not exactly new, this is the first photograph we have taken of this plant. This has the brightest red lip I have ever seen in a cymbidium, and has an incredible velvet sheen to the lip as well. It was awarded a JC/AOS in the San Diego show on March 19. It is blooming with 2 spikes in an 6 inch pot and about 26 flowers. 48 kb. Cym. Splatters 'Red Velvet'
Cym. Splatters 'Mardi Gras' is another interesting spotted flower from the cross, and at 4 inches is the largest we kept. Although not exactly new, this is the first photograph we have taken of this plant. 50 kb.Cym. Splatters 'Mardi Gras'
Cym. Splatters 'Flamenco' is another interesting spotted flower from the cross, and is the best of the cross that I have seen. It has about 40 flowers on two 3 foot long spikes in a gallon pot. Each spike also has one or 2 branches at the very base with 3 to 6 buds on each branch. 50 kb. Cym. Splatters 'Flamenco'
Pure color cymbidiums are one of my many favorites despite their often slower growth and shy blooming habits. This Cym. Pure Gold (Sleeping Lamb x Sleeping Beauty) first bloom seedling has a striking clear bright yellow color with 30 flowers on two arching spikes. 42 kb.Cym. Pure Gold
This plant of Cym. Foxy Lady 'Kathleen' (Touchstone 'Janis' x Karen Pepper 'Cafe au Lait') is one of the first of a low yield cross to flower. The form of the 3 inch flower is exceptional and the color is pretty nice as well. The plant has about 13 flowers on one spike on a two bulb plant, and was awarded a Bronze from the CSA and an HCC from the AOS at the San Diego show on March 19. 50 kb.Cym. Foxy Lady 'Kathleen'
White cymbidiums are not my favorite, but we do make a few white crosses to satisfy the market. This plant of Cym. (Via Mar Tranquila 'Mt. Cook' x Loren's Treasure 'Solana Beach') (LB 629) is one of the first of the cross to flower with 12 flowers on a 3.5 foot spike. I think the 5 inch flowers are very good and of award quality. 44 kb. Cym. (Via Mar Tranquila x Loren's Treasure)
Orange cymbidiums are difficult to produce from seed since the orange color results from an unusual combination of red and yellow colors together in the flower. Dark burnt oranges are equally difficult to get, but this seedling of Cym. Persian Gold (Warona 'Copper' x Mighty Mouse 'Minnie') (LB 645) is a good example of this elusive color. The plant has 8 flowers almost 4 inches across on its first blooming. 42 kb.Cym. Persian Gold first bloom
Another of the dark burnt orange plants to bloom from the cross of Cym. Persian Gold (LB 645). This plant has 10 flowers on the spike, and was awarded an HCC/AOS at the San Diego Show on March 19 with the varietal name 'Wow'. The flower has a remarkable magenta sheen at the base and tip of the sepals and petals, and seems to glow in sunlight. 38 kb.Cym. Persian Gold first bloom
Yet another of the dark burnt orange plants to bloom from the cross of Cym. Persian Gold (LB 645). This plant has 14 flowers on the spike. Most of the cross has been lighter in color than this. 36 kb.Cym. Persian Gold first bloom
The Cym. Clarisse Pepper cross (Clarisse Austin 'Embers' x Claude Pepper 'Bucklands Beach')(LB 648) is producing mostly medium red flowers as shown here with this first bloom seedling with a 3.75 inch flower, blooming in February 1999. The form is a little cupped but the color and form is good and the lip is quite dark. 42 kb.Cym. Clarisse Pepper first bloom
Another of the Cym. Clarisse Pepper cross (LB 648) first bloom seedlings with more of a lavender red color, blooming in February 1999. Some of the Clarisse Peppers like this plant have very bright clean colors, without any of the dullness we often see in the brownish reds. This flower was about 4 inches across. 44 kb.Cym. Clarisse Pepper first bloom
Another of the Cym. Clarisse Pepper cross (LB 648) first bloom seedlings with more of a lavender red color and a 4 inch flower, blooming in February 1999. The solid even red in the lip is attractive on this plant. 43 kb.Cym. Clarisse Pepper first bloom
Another of the Cym. Clarisse Pepper cross (LB 648) first bloom seedlings with more of a brick red color, blooming in February 1999. Like most of the Clarisse Peppers, this flower is about 4 inches across with a good even color. 43 kb.Cym. Clarisse Pepper first bloom
This plant of Cym. (Lady Spring 'Embers' x Claude Pepper 'Dragon's Blood) (LB 731) is the first of the cross to flower. The flower has a deep brick red color and is about 4 inches across with 7 flowers on the spike, and is blooming less than 4 years from flask. 44 kb. Cym. (Lady Spring x Claude Pepper)
This is another first bloom seedling of Cym. (Lady Spring 'Embers' x Claude Pepper 'Dragon's Blood) (LB 731). The flower has a deep brick red color and is about 4 inches across, and is blooming less than 4 years from flask. 46 kb. Cym. (Lady Spring x Claude Pepper)
The sibling cross of Cym. Karen Pepper 'Cafe au Lait' with Karen Pepper 'Embers' (LB 685) is producing some exceptionally round brightly colored novelty cymbidium flowers. This first bloom seedling had 14 flowers, each about 3 inches across on 2 spikes with the sparking white lip from the 'Cafe au Lait' parent. Some of this cross, including this plant, are too cupped in form to be acceptable for judging. 44 kb.Cym. Karen Pepper First Bloom
We don't have many white cymbidiums since our pot plant market prefers more colored flowers, but Cym. Woody Wilson 'Ann' is probably the best one we have. This year the plant had 13 very flat flowers with extremely heavy substance, each 5 inches across, on a 3 foot spike and, like all of our plants, was grown outdoors under shadecloth until the first flowers started to open. The color is an ivory white with none of the sunstaining so often seen on white cymbidiums bloomed under high light conditions. The only bad characteristic is the close spacing of flowers on the spike. 46 kb.Cym. Woody Wilson 'Ann'
This is another first bloom seedling of Cym. (Lady Spring 'Embers' x Claude Pepper 'Dragon's Blood) (LB 731). The flower has a deep brick red color and is about 4 inches across, and is blooming in March, less than 4 years from flask. 64 kb.Cym. (Lady Spring x Claude Pepper)
This is another first bloom seedling of Cym. (Lady Spring 'Embers' x Claude Pepper 'Dragon's Blood) (LB 731). The flower has a deep solid red color and is about 4.5 inches across, and is blooming less than 4 years from flask. 62 kb.Cym. Lady Spring x Claude Pepper)
Cym. Dorothy Rowe 'Showoff' (Claude Pepper x Robert Rowe) is a very deep cerise pink flower that is about 5 inches across. It received a B/CSA with about 22 flowers on 2 spikes in April. 67 kb. Cym. Dorothy Rowe 'Showoff'
This is another first bloom seedling of the cross of Cym. Foxy Lady (Touchstone x Karen Pepper). The flower is about 2.5 inches across with a nice red blush over yellow and the snow white red banded lip that we usually see coming through from the Karen Pepper parent. 51 kb. Cym. Foxy Lady
This unnamed hybrid is one of the best we have seen bloom out of the cross of Cym. (Lady Spring x Cym. Red Panther). It has 10 solid red flowers 4 inches across and bloomed for the first time in April 1999. The color holds well and doesn't fade in bright light. 61 kb. Cym. (Lady Spring x Cym. Red Panther)
Cym. Tequila Sunrise (Mighty Mouse 'Minnie' x Claude Pepper 'Dragon's Blood') is the first plant of this cross to flower, about 4 years from flask. It is interesting burgundy color with a dusty or grey overlay. It has 10 flowers on an upright spike. 58 kb. Cym. Tequila Sunrise
The hybrid Cym. Mount Vision has produced several nicely spotted light pink flowers. This plant has 10 flowers as a first bloom seedling and is 4 inches across. 67 kb.Cym. Mount Vision
This is an example of Cym. Regal Ruby (Red Beauty x Claude Pepper) and has 6 flowers 5 inches across on a small first bloom seedling. It is a very well formed flower and is dark rose in color. 54 kb.Cym. Regal Ruby
Cym. (Valley of Death 'Inferno' x Caripepper 'Sunset') is a first bloom seedling blooming 4 years from flask with 5 spikes and 45 3.5 inch flowers in an uncrowded 6 inch pot. I love the production, and the color is a great yellowish orange. 58 kb.Cym. (Valley of Death x Caripepper)
