The 1999 Orange County CSA Show

This is a photographic review of the some of the new and more interesting things that we saw at the Orange County CSA Show at the Crystal Court Mall at South Coast Plaza on February 4 - 7 1999. Click on the thumbnail images to bring up a larger image (size shown in kilobytes).

Crystal Court sponsors a massive display in the rotunda of the mall for the OCCSA show. This year, the display featured the wedding dress of Marie Antoinette and was about 25 feet tall. The dress featured novelty and standard green cymbidiums with white cattleyas and dendrobiums among the Boston fern and flowering kale. 47 kb.Center display

The show at Crystal Court is put on by the Orange County Branch of the CSA. This display was the one put in by the San Diego County CSA branch, and it featured mostly Cymbidiums and Paphs. 80 kb.San Diego CSA Branch display
Andy Phillips (Andy's Orchids) consistently puts together a fine display of nothing but species. This is his display in the 1999 show, and was spectacular as usual, towering 10 feet in the air. This spring Andy included a number of dendrobium species. 43 kb.Andy's Orchids Display

This fine Paph. venustum album was one of the many paphs in the Species Society display. This all green flower with its characteristic prominent veining in the pouch is one of my favorites. 53kb.Paph. venustum album
One of the highlights of the Species Society Display was this beautifully grown and flowered Bonatea speciosa belonging to Pat and Ginny Worthington. This terrestrial plant received an FCC/AOS and I believe it was the best orchid in the show. 85 kb.Bonatea speciosa
Another plant in the Species Society Display was this Paph. sukhakulii 'Supreme' AM/AOS. 44 kb.Paph. sukhakulii 'Supreme' AM/AOS
Another plant in the Species Society Display was this Paph. tonsum which received a Bronze from the CSA. 60 kb.Paph. tonsum B/CSA
I stayed a long time at the Species Society Display. This delightful Paph. wardii album which received an HCC/AOS was one of the many paphs in the display. 76 kb.Paph. wardii album HCC/AOS
The Species Society Display included a number of small flowers as well. I didn't get the name of this little charmer, but the flower was only a half inch across. 48 kb.unknown species
The only plant in the Species Society Display which was not a species was this impressive specimen of Brassavola Little Stars, a primary hybrid of nodosa x caudata. 113 kb.B. Little Stars
The Rowland Collection specializes in miniature and novelty cymbidiums as well as paphs. Their display received the CSA Paph. Gold Medal at the show, and the large green novelty cymbidium, Relampago Verde (Minette x Baltic Honey), in the center of the display was the best novelty cymbidium in the show. 71 kb.The Rowland Collection display
Paph. wolterianum or appletonianum is a delightful species. A group of these were clustered around wolterianum 'Miki' HCC/AOS in the Rowland Collection Display. 'Miki' is one of the best with wide petals that do not roll toward the back, and is a large 5 inch flower. 49 kb.Wolterianum ' Miki' HCC/AOS
Norman's Orchids always puts in a large multigeneric display, and this year was no exception. 51 kb.Norman's Orchids display
We have put in a display of cymbidiums in the Orange County Show for the last 17 years. This shows part of our 1999 display which won the CSA Gold Medal for the best display of Cymbidiums in the show, and several first bloom pure color seedlings. 49 kb.Casa de las Orquideas display

One of the new crosses we are blooming out is Cym. Clarisse Pepper (Clarisse Austin 'Embers x Claude Pepper 'Buckland's Beach) (LB 648). Most of these have come in red to brown and intense dark pink colors. This is a deep salmon pink 5 inch flower with 8 flat flowers on the first blooming. 35 kb.Cym. Clarisse Pepper
Another of the Clarisse Pepper cross blooming for the first time with 23 well formed flowers about 4 inches across on 2 spikes. This flower is more brownish red but has a deep solid color. 25 kb.Cym. Clarisse Pepper
We have seen a number of the Cym. Pebbles (Rincon 'Clarisse' 4N x Red Beauty 'Pr. Frederika' 4N) flower this year. Most have been light red to brown flowers, with many having patterned color as shown by this seedling blooming for the first time with 3 spikes and 28 flowers 4.5 inches across. 58 kb.Cym. Pebbles
We have been well impressed with the first plants of the cross of Cym. (Red Beauty 'Carmen' 4N x Cym. Ruby Eyes 'Red Baron' 4N). This plant has 12 flowers about 3 inches across on an arching spike, and shows the deep clear wine red color from Ruby Eyes that has come through in all of the cross. 26 kb.Cym (Red Beauty x Ruby Eyes)
Cym. Christmas Clarion 'Apricot Glow' (Rincon 'Clarisse' 4N x Peetie) is a delightful apricot orange free blooming plant that normally blooms at Christmas. It is blooming about 4 weeks late like most of our cymbidiums are this year. 32 kb.Cym. Christmas Clarion 'Apricot Glow'
Cym. Vanfare 'Creme de Menthe' B/CSA is one of the largest cymbidiums we have, and is about 6 inches across. This blooming has 19 flowers on 2 spikes in a 6 inch pot. 48 kb.Cym. Vanfare 'Creme de Menthe' B/CSA
Cym. aloifolium hybrids are uncommon and often difficult to flower. This Cym Black Forest 'Dark Spirit' (Gordon Gibbs x Tethys) is a very attractive second generation aloifolium hybrid which is a reliable bloomer and received an HCC/AOS during the show judging. It has more than 20 dark wine red flowers 3 inches across with a black velvet lip on an arching to pendant spike more than 3 feet long. 54 kb.Cym. Black Forest 'Dark Spirit'
We always try to have a peloric flower in the show, and this year we included a plant of Cym. Phreaque 'Barbara' (Cleo's Melody 'Freakout' x Winter Wonder 'Bonanza', which is named for my dear friend Barbara Uno, who twisted my arm enough to get the first division of this plant. The peloric lateral sepals is a dominant characteristic inherited from the Cleo's Melody parent. The characteristic breeds true, and is seen in about 50% of the offspring. 56 kb.Cym. Phreaque 'Barbara'
This plant of Cym. Disney Girl 'Fantasia' (tracyanum x Robin) received a JC/AOS at this show for Orchids Limited International, and was a center of attraction in their display. I like the odd spotted flowers and this was a well deserved award. 70 kb.Cym. Disney Girl 'Fantasia' JC/AOS
Orchids Limited International incorporates plants from several growers in their display. Maynor Alonzo provided this plant of Cym. (Pywacket x devonianum) 'Wilahea' which received a well deserved HCC/AOS. This plant had exceptional form, considering that Pywacket is a hybrid of (tracyanum x Tethys), and delightful spotting also. 44 kb.Cym. (Pywacket x devonianum) 'Wilahea' HCC/AOS
Sunset Orchids had their normal display of impressive odont intergeneric hybrids, but this Lycaste Klana 'Sunset Distinction' HCC/AOS impressed me more this year. 50 kb.Lycaste Klana 'Sunset Distinction' HCC/AOS
Another Lycaste in the Sunset Orchids was also very impressive. This Lycaste Balleae 'Superbum' received a CCM/AOS. 68 kb.Lycaste Balleae 'supurbum' CCM/AOS
Ontario Orchids showed a rather nice phal in their display, a very bold spotted flower named Phal. Ever Spring King 'King'. 44 kb.Phal. Ever Spring King 'King
Ontario Orchids also exhibited a rather nice splash petal catt. This bold showy flower is BLC Chinese Beauty. 36 kb.Blc. Chinese Beauty
Another Phalaenopsis shown by EFG Orchids caught my eye. This Phal. (Temptation x Rousserole) is very nicely covered with fine spotting. 44 kb.Phal (Temptation x Rousserole)
