Information on the CSA Journal
The official publication of the Cymbidium Society of America

This portion of the Casa de las Orquideas website is devoted to the CSA Journal, and the Cymbidium Society of America (CSA). The CSA is an international society devoted to the culture and knowledge of cymbidium, paphiopedilum and other orchids suitable for growing outdoors in a subtropical climate such as the coastal regions of Southern California. The society is open to all, but is oriented toward the cooler growing orchid types. The CSA provides quality judging of cymbidiums, paphiopedilums and phragmepedium orchids. There are a number of CSA affiliated societies, called branches, in Southern California, the Bay Area of California, Japan and New Zealand, and judging is held in conjunction with most of the branches. The total membership is about 1000 members.

The CSA Journal is provides an opportunity for authors who wish to write on any aspect of outdoor growing orchids which is of interest to the general membership. We prefer text material for publication be submitted in electronic format, preferably in Microsoft Word, Wordperfect, or as a simple text file. Articles may be submitted on Floppy Disk, Zip 100 disk or a CD. Submissions on disc must be in PC format, not Mac. Material may also be submitted electronically via email directly to csajournal@orquideas.com, or to our articles committee chairman, Mr. Tony Velardi at gandtv@aol.com. Photographs are a welcome addition to most articles, and we can accept photographs as color or black and white prints, color or black and white negatives, or as color slides. Photographs may also be submitted electronically as a high resolution tiff file, however we prefer to scan the photographs directly to ensure a uniform standard. We try to publish suitable photographs in color whenever possible, but limitations on the number of color pages may restrict photos to black and white. If articles are not in electronic format, pleas submit in printed form rather than longhand. All photos supplied in support of an article will be returned to the author after publication

The Journal also accepts advertising for businesses which provide plants, materials or other services for orchid growing. Advertising rates, requirements and deadlines are as follows.

DEADLINE DATE. The charge for running color in an ad (regardless of the size of the color or the size of the ad will be $150 (press run & stripping charge) plus the cost of the ad. Color slides, color negatives from print film or color prints may be submitted. Black and white photos may be run in any size ad at no extra charge. Cost of Ads-2001 & 2002

The cost for ads in the CSA Journal is listed below. Pre-payment is required at the time of ad submission, unless prior arrangements are made with the editor. Pre-payments for six issues in advance will receive a 20% discount for the ad cost only, not charges for color printing, when a written contract agreement with the editor is accomplished.

Submission of ads in digital format is preferred. The ad should be composed with one of the following software programs: Corel Draw 8, Corel Photopaint 8, Adobe Illustrator 9 or Adobe Photoshop 6. Fonts should be Adobe Type 1 if possible, and digital copies of all Type 1 fonts used in an ad should be included with the ad. Ads submitted using True Type fonts will be modified to use equivalent Type 1 fonts or the closest match we have in our Type 1 font library. Digital ads may also be submitted as EPS files to avoid font substitution. In this case, text must be converted to curves, and the resolution should be 350 LPI. Camera ready ads may also be submitted. For camera ready ads with photographs, please include the slide, negative, print or digital copy of the photograph for best quality results.

Please note that the below listed rates are for ads that are properly composed in digital format or in camera ready form. If composition and/or typesetting (other than font substitution) is required by the editorial staff, then an additional charge of 30% of the cost of the ad ($25 minimum) will be added.
